Fiery crash kills man on 17K

May 23rd, 2012

Early last Tuesday morning, a fatal crash in the area of Route 17K and Bailey Road in Montgomery took one life and nearly claimed another.

According to Montgomery Town Police, at approximately 4:50 a.m. the victim of the crash was traveling westbound on Route 17K in an SUV when he veered into the oncoming lane, striking a mail truck.

Police Chief Butch Amthor said that officers were on the scene within a minute or two, but both vehicles were engulfed in flames and there was nothing they could do.

The operator of the mail truck was reportedly knocked unconscious briefly by the impact, but was able to climb out of his vehicle before the flames overtook it. According to police he was shaken, but did not suffer any injuries.

The driver of the SUV has not been officially identified. He is believed to have been a non-resident, living and working in the Montgomery area. His remains are with the Medical Examiner, pending formal identification and notification of family.

Amthor said it appears that the victim veered into the oncoming lane. The cause of the accident, however, is still under investigation and the Montgomery Town Police are being assisted by the NYSP Accident Reconstruction Unit. No further information is being released at this time, due to pending notifications.

The fire was extinguished by the Montgomery Fire Department. The Orange County Sheriff and State Police also responded to the scene.
