Dukes set to defend Section IX title
Marlboro’s boys basketball team is starting the 2012/2013 season with a sectional title, and the Dukes know there will be no anonymity this year.
“Last year we kind of crept up on everybody,” said Mike Koehler, Marlboro’s coach. “Now (the other teams) know what expect.”
Key players lost from last year’s squad include Mike Tamburri, Alan Mussachio and Matt Orszewski. Koehler still has many from last year as the Dukes embark on another title run this season after beating Red Hook in both the MHAL and Section IX, Class A championships eight months ago.
“It was a very good team,” said Koehler.
Seniors Matt Tamburri and Tyler Terpening will be joined at guard with juniors Zach Sakadelis and Ryan Cary, who will play point guard. Connor Jollie will also play guard.
Also returning are Austin Beck, a senior, and Alex Smith, a junior, at forward. Newcomers to the team include Tyler Banks, Julian Allen and Alan Dumas.
Koehler said the team is getting ready for another playoff run, and the goal is to at least achieve the same success as last year – the first time the Dukes won a sectional title since 1989.
“We want to compete for a sectional title,” said Koehler. “It won’t be easy.”
Tamburri was back at practice days after his football seasoned ended when the Dukes lost in the state Class B semis. He said the basketball team is already a welcome squad with much of the same chemistry from last year.
“It is a hard working group of guys,” he said. “(The chemistry) is very similar.”
