Dukes improve to 6-0; rout Onteora
Marlboro boys basketball team ended 2012 undefeated, and they stayed that way as they entered 2013. The Dukes improved to 6-0 when they stayed far in front of Onteora to beat the Indians 81-57 at home Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Dukes, now the fifth-ranked Class B team in the state, got plenty of help from their big men, Alex Smith and Tyler Banks, when they combined for 40 points.
“Alex and Tyler were phenomenal inside,”said Mike Koehler, Marlboro’s coach.
Smith led the Dukes with 21 points and was 5/7 from the line. Banks, a sophomore, scored 19 points, while downing his only free throw. Zach Sakadelis also scored 10 points with a pair of three-pointers.
The Dukes kept the pressure on the Indians, and it began when Matt Tamburri took Smith’s game tip-off right to the basket for an immediate score during the opening seconds of the game. Later, though, the Dukes found themselves getting a little un-spun by the pace of their own game.
”We like to play fast. We played too fast tonight,” said Koehler. “We were too excited. We made too many passes, uncharacteristically, over the head, at the feet. We had good looks but some bad passes.”
Charlie Fina led a trio of Indians in double figures when he led his team with 18 points. Cory Beesmer scored 13 points for Onteora, and Johan Heckelman scored 11 points for the trio.
