Cobras edge Nuclears, 2-1
The Middletown Cobras improved to 7-3 Thursday, June 20, after they beat the Newburgh Nuclears on the road 2-1.
“We’re coming together. Our pitching has been carrying us,” said Rob FitzPatrick, Middletown’s coach.
Middletown’s Josh Walker and Grant Chenowith combined for a two-hitter to stifle the Nuclears.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Walker and John Lindau singled home Middletown’s runs. Newburgh scored its only run on Tyler Curtis’ sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
“We’re struggling a little with the bats, but they are starting to come around,” said FitzPatrick.
Middletown, the 2012 American Legion District 9 champs and state runner-up, scored 20 runs on the previous Sunday during the team’s only victory in the Graci wood-bat tournament in Peekskill.
The Nuclears lost to Middletown in the District 9 title game last year and won the Graci tournament, but they couldn’t get by the Cobras last week.
